How to Make Onion Rings Without Eggs
Step 1: Preparation of the Onion
First, peel and wash 4 to 6 large-size onions with fresh normal water, and slice them. For a large-sized onion, cut it into around 3 pieces or to cut 1 cm thick slices. 1 cm thick slices are ideal cuts for this recipe. Remove the center of these slices, then split the rings. Then take each of the surrounding circles and divide them.
Next, remove all of the membranes from onion rings, which is a very thin, translucent covering that is on the interior wall of every layer of the onion. Try to get rid of it because it will make the surface a little rough, which helps the batter adhere to the onion rings and will improve the flavor.
Step 3: Making the Batter
Take a mixing bowl to prepare the batter for the onion rings, then add 1 cup of all-purpose flour, Corn flour 1/3 cup, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, garlic powder 1 teaspoon, Red chili powder 1 teaspoon, Chilli flakes 2 teaspoons, oregano dried 2 teaspoons, Baking powder ½ teaspoon, vegetable oil 1 tablespoon, and salt to taste.
Mix everything thoroughly after adding all the dry ingredients.
Now, add cold water gradually, with the help of a whisk, and combine everything very thoroughly and slowly; add water and mix it until a beautiful batter is formed. Maintain a semi-thick batter consistency. Keep in mind that the batter shouldn’t be overly thick or thin.
As a result, add water very gradually; otherwise, the batter will be overly wet. Now mix the batter very well so that there are no lumps in it. Now the onion rings batter is ready, keep it aside for the next step.
Step 4: Season the Breadcrumbs
Add salt and black pepper to the breadcrumbs and combine well. Seasoned bread crumbs add better flavor when they are coated.
Step 5: Fry the Onion Ring
Now that all the parts are prepared to coat the onion rings, set up an assembly line. Now take an onion ring and lightly coat it with batter. Tap off any excess batter. Then quickly add these onion rings to the breadcrumbs. It should be quickly coated with breadcrumbs on both sides.
Once each onion ring has been thoroughly coated, arrange them on a tray or plate to rest for about 2/3 minutes before frying.
Put the oil in a wok to fry the onion rings after resting. Now deep fry the coated onion rings till crisp and golden brown in medium-hot oil or 190 degrees Celsius.
Once the ring has finished frying, remove the fried onion rings over a sieve to let the extra oil drip off. After dripping the oil, your crispy onion rings are ready.
The onion ring should be served hot with your favorite sauce.
What Sauce is Good With Onion Rings?
The right sauce can make all the difference. In my opinion, the best sauce to pair with onion rings is a classic favorite – ranch dressing. The creamy, tangy flavor of ranch perfectly complements the crispy texture and savory taste of the onion rings. Other great options include BBQ sauce or honey mustard for a sweet and tangy twist.
How to Choose Onions for Onion Rings
When making the perfect onion rings, choosing the right onions is key. Here are some tips to help you choose the best onions for your onion rings:
- Look for onions that are good quality and dry. Avoid onions that are soft, mushy, or have any signs of mold.
- Choose onions that are large in size. The larger the onion, the easier it will be to create consistent rings.
- Select onions with a sweet flavor. While any onion will work for onion rings, sweet onions like Vidalia or Walla Walla will give your onion rings a more complex and delicious flavor.
- Peel the onions and slice them into about 1/2-inch thick rings. Be sure to remove the outermost layer of the onion, as it can be tough and chewy.
- Soak the onion rings in cold water for at least 30 minutes before coating and frying. This helps remove any excess starch and makes the onion rings crispier.
My Secret Tips for Perfect Onion Rings

- Fry the onion rings in oil at the proper temperature (around 375°F) to ensure they cook evenly and do not become greasy.
